Taika Waititi was born in 1975 and also goes by the name Cohen. He hails from the East Coast’s Raukokore district and has worked in the arts for many years as a visual artist, actor, writer, and director. “As an artist, I have a wide range of creative sources,” he writes. Perhaps it’s an inability to sit still long enough to fully explore a single form or media. Maybe it’s because of the coffee. It’s probably because I’m an artist who expresses himself through whatever medium is available. How can someone be interested in only one method of creating worlds and creatures when there are so many exciting ways to do so?
It’s as if you’re only using leeks and onions in your cuisine. Taika has been a driving influence in some of New Zealand’s most imaginative and popular productions as a performer and comic. Taika has won New Zealand’s premier comedy accolades, the Billy T Award and the Spirit of the Fringe Award in Edinburgh, with a solid experience in comic writing and performing (alongside fellow comedian Jemaine Clement). Taika performed stand-up comedy all around New Zealand, and in 2004 he released his solo show, Taika’s Incredible Show, which he describes as “not very incredible but had a cool poster that I created myself.”
Taika has received critical recognition for his dramatic ability, and he was nominated for Best Actor at the Nokia Film Awards in 2000 for his work in Sark. Eagle vs. Shark, Taika’s debut feature film, was released in 2007 with a video release in early 2008. At the US Comedy Arts Festival, he received best scriptwriter for the picture. Taika was designated one of ten directors “to watch” by Variety magazine on the eve of the film’s premiere showing at the Sundance Film Festival.
At the 2008 Qantas Film and Television Awards, he was also named Best Director for the film. For the American cable channel HBO, Taika directed two episodes of Flight of the Conchords, a twelve-part comedy series produced by and starring his friends Jermaine Clement and Brett McKenzie. Two Cars, One Night, Taika’s short film, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005. Tama Tu, a short film about a group of Mori troops in Italy during WWII, earned a slew of international prizes and qualified him for an Oscar nomination.
Taika worked and exhibited in the Schliemann 40 House in Berlin for two years and experimented with photography and painting for numerous years. Also collaborated with the architectural firm Wraight & Associates on a proposal for Wellington City Council’s Wellington Gateway project, and he illustrated Jo Randerson’s book of short stories The Keys to Hell.Boy, Taika’s 2010 feature film, delves deeper into the characters and ideas explored in his Oscar-nominated first short Two Cars, One Night.
The film was shot in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. Boy became the highest-grossing local picture in New Zealand history after its debut. With his new feature project Jojo Rabbit (still in development), he visited the 2012 Berlinale and CineMart in Rotterdam (2012).Waititi acted as Viago in the New Zealand-based vampire comedy mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, which he co-directed with friend and fellow comedian Jemaine Clement in 2013.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople, aititi’s fourth feature, opened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival to acclaim, earning him the opportunity to direct Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok. Taika was named New Zealander of the Year in 2017 and stated that “he owed a lot of his success to his parents’ support, who never pressed him to acquire a “real job.” Takika received the Te Tohu Tiketike o Matariki Supreme Award as well as the Te Waipuna—Rangi Award for Arts and Entertainment at the annual Matariki Awards, which honour Maori excellence.
He worked on a plan for Wellington City Council’s Wellington Gateway project with the architectural company Wraight & Associates. ‘Upoko O Te Ika A Maui’ is a sculpture he created. “Plans for a 35-metre-high lit sculpture at the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge have been scrapped due to fears for planes and a big budget blowout,” according to the article. Despite this, they were awarded the Gold Award in the Landscape Design Category – Visionary Lan
