Actor Robert Pattinson was born on May 13, 1986, in London, England. He is best recognised for his performance as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. His role as vampire Edward Cullen in Twilight elevated him to heartthrob status shortly after. Pattinson’s famous films include Remember Me, Water for Elephants, Cosmopolis, and The Lost City of Z, in addition to the Twilight sequels. He was cast as the Caped Crusader in the upcoming film The Batman in 2019. Despite his modest nature, Robert Pattinson has always desired to be a performer, first as a musician like his older sister Lizzy.
His father was the one who pushed him to pursue acting. One memorable night out for dinner with his father, the two were seated next to a group of young girls who informed Pattinson that they’d just returned from the Barnes Theatre Club, a prestigious programme at the Harrodian School outside of London. Pattinson later recounted, “He had nagged me about attending since then.”
“He said he’d pay me at one time.” Pattinson’s performances gained attention, and at the age of 17, he made the transition from stage to cinema, landing a role in the television film Ring of the Nibelungs. For the job, he had to go to South Africa for many months, where the film was being shot. Following that, he had an uncredited role in Vanity Fair (2004). Pattinson met with Mike Newell, the eventual director of 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, at the same time he was wrapping up work on those two projects. Pattinson was cast as Cedric Diggory, Harry Potter’s friend and fellow wizard, after the meeting and following audition. His first movie appearance was in Vanity Fair (2004), but he was deleted from the final cut and didn’t find out until he attended the premiere.
Because she felt bad about not notifying him, the casting director arranged him an audition for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). At the age of 19, he was fortunate enough to get the role of Cedric Diggory, which introduced him to a broader audience, and he went on to star in largely smaller British TV shows. He was still pondering whether or not he wanted to pursue acting when Hollywood displayed simply a passing interest in him. Pattinson would occasionally send audition tapes for gigs in America during the time. One, for a romantic comedy, led to an in-person audition in Los Angeles.
While in town, he went in for another audition with Catherine Hardwicke, the director of Thirteen (2003), for a part in what he assumed was an indie film based on a low-profile book about a vampire. Despite being the last of 3000 male actors to audition for the position, the portrayal of Edward Cullen in the film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels catapulted him to unexpected global prominence at the age of 22, with the five films grossing over $3.3 billion worldwide between 2008 and 2012. In addition to the Twilight Saga films, he also appeared in the film Remember Me (2010).
The Twilight period of Pattinson was weird. He had been pushed onto Hollywood’s A-list as a heartthrob, but he also had ideas about what he wanted to achieve as an actor – or what he was capable of doing. That changed when auteur director David Cronenberg made him an unexpected direct offer to star in Cosmopolis (2012), which he regarded as an eye-opening experience.
It reminded him of his passion for film, of why he wanted to be an actor in the first place, and reinforced his ambition to work with great filmmakers in the coming years. Pattinson is a great cinephile, thus he’s largely starred in independent films from respected auteur directors since then, like The Rover (2014). Queen of the Desert (2015), Life (2015), and The Childhood of a Leader (2015).
His unrecognisable character as an explorer in the Amazon rainforest in filmmaker James Gray’s The Lost City of Z (2016) earned him tremendous acclaim. In the gritty crime thriller Good Time (2017), his transformation into a sleazy, manic conman garnered him a six-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival and a nomination for Best Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards. It was a watershed moment in his transformation into a versatile character actor, with critics hailing his performance as a revelation and a career-defining performance.
